Daily Gospel reflections: Recognizing the real Savior

“Finally, he sent his son to them, thinking, ‘They will respect my son.’” (Matthew 21:37)

Our decision about what to sacrifice for Lent can rest on any number of factors. I try to discern something in my life that I’m treating as a savior.

What is is that I’m doing that I’m convinced I must continue doing in order to be at peace or happy? What pleasure do I look forward to, thinking, “When I can just eat that … spend time doing that … that will make today a good day. I’ll be happy.”?

Both of today’s Scripture readings — the story of Joseph and his brothers and Jesus’ parable of the son killed by his father’s tenants — are about a failure to recognize. A willful failure, in fact.

During Lent, I want to clear out the false saviors so I can recognize the real One — the Son — when he comes.

God, strengthen me in my Lenten journey.
