Inspiration from St. Hilary, Bishop and Doctor of the Church

St. Hilary of Poitiers was not only the bishop of Poitiers, but also a doctor of the Church. The title doctor of the Church is given to individuals who have provided important contributions to theology and doctrine.

Sometimes called “the Hammer of the Arians,” St. Hilary lived in the first half of the fourth century (circa 310 – 367 A.D.) His feast day is Jan. 13. In honor of this feast day, here are some quotes from some of St. Hilary’s writings:

For we recognize the Lord Christ as no creature, for indeed he is none such; nor as something that has been made, since he is himself the Lord of all things that are made; but we know him to be God, God the true generation of God the Father.

For Christ teaches that only those who become again as it were little children, and by the simplicity of that age cut off the inordinate affections of vice, can enter the kingdom of heaven.

Lord, I pray thee let not my weakness distract me, but let my speech be of that alone in which the salvation of my soul consists; and let me never break forth to that degree both of folly and wickedness, as to wish to be a judge of thy omnipotence, and of thy sacraments; and suffer me not to exalt my weak opinion above either the divine determination of thy infinity, or that belief of thy eternity which has been revealed to me. Amen.

The chief service I owe you, O God, is that every thought and word of mine should speak of you.

No matter how sinful one may have been, if he has devotion to Mary, it is impossible that he be lost.
