In 1940, when Elsie Robinson wrote this article, there were over 270,000 divorces granted in the United States. Last year there were well over a million. Marriage isn’t getting any easier these days, which makes the strong language Ms. Robinson uses here seem all the more appropriate. Marriage is very hard work, she says. It’s a “dangerous adventure.” She’s stretching more than a little when she says, “If marriage is romance, then the electric chair is a hot water bottle,” but she’s on target when she says a marriage will surely fail “unless you’re [both] willing to work at it as the greatest job of your life.”

My wife, who works with engaged couples in our parish, thinks this article should be read aloud at marriage prep sessions. I’d be interested to hear what you think.
