Malden dead on model priest's anniversary
Actor Karl Malden, who played Fr Pete Barry in the Marlon Brandon classic "On the Waterfront", died yesterday aged 97 exactly 25 years after the death of Jesuit labor priest on whom his character was based, Fr John Corridan, a Jesuit who graduated from Regis High School in New York in 1928.

Corridan became known throughout the Port of New York as the "Waterfront Priest." He wrote fiery articles for America and other publications condemning the "shape-up" system of waterfront hiring, testified before congressional committees investigating union corruption, and appeared in televised debates. He also provided "Waterfront" filmmakers with his speeches and writings on waterfront conditions, including the famous "Christ is on the waterfront" speech he had first presented at a Jersey City chapter of the Knights of Columbus in 1948. In "On the Waterfront", Malden's character provides a stirring rendition of the speech over the body of a slain longshoreman. Kazan and Schulberg refused repeated demands by the producers to shorten the scene, which is the moral core of the film since it persuades longshoreman Terry Malloy (Marlon Brando) to follow his conscience and testify against waterfront criminals.

Today's Quiet Moment
Friday, July 3 Feast of St. Thomas
When Christ says, “Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Matthew 5:48), He is talking not about the perfection of a student who always gets the highest test scores or a child who manages not to step on any of the sidewalk’s cracks, but of being whole, being in a state of communion, participating in God’s love.
