Worth Watching in November 2011



PBS introduces NOVA’s “THE FABRIC OF THE COSMOS,” hosted by physicist Brian Greene, and reveals more wonders of the universe. Wednesdays (Nov. 2 to 23).

Also on PBS comes the season premiere of MASTERPIECE CONTEMPORARY with PAGE EIGHT (a spy film), as well as the NATURE show “MY LIFE AS A TURKEY,” based on the true story of writer and naturalist Joe Hutto (Nov. 16).

HALLMARK CHANNEL fills this month with original Christmas-themed movies including LOVE’S CHRISTMAS JOURNEY (Nov. 5), MISTLETOE OVER MANHATTAN (Nov. 6), THE CASE FOR CHRISTMAS (Nov. 19), and HOLIDAY ENGAGEMENT (Nov. 27).

Betty White, Ewan McGregor, and Kristin Chenoweth take part in the HERO DOG AWARDS, which acknowledges service dogs that work with the military, police and firefighters, and people with disabilities (Nov. 11).

ST. LUKE PRODUCTIONS has released BENEDICTUS MOMENTS, a radio and web series based on daily meditations of the pope, available at stlukeproductions.com/benedictus.

CATHOLIC TV offers family friendly entertainment with an original Catholic sitcom, MASS CONFUSION, filmed in the Atlanta Archdiocese, premiering Thanksgiving night. Catholic TV may be viewed live streaming on the Internet at catholictv.com (Nov. 24).

ARTHUR CHRISTMAS offers viewers a chance to take a trip to the North Pole to see Santa with Arthur the Aardvark. This animated film features the voices of James McAvoy and Hugh Laurie (Nov. 23).

PUSS IN BOOTS is a fun film with swashbuckling feline Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) fighting to save his town with the help of Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek) and Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis) (Nov. 4).

HAPPY FEET 2, the sequel to “Happy Feet,” the Academy Award-winning animated film, returns audiences to Antarctica with the voices of Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Pink, and Hank Azaria (in 3D) (Nov. 18).

HUGO, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Ben Kingsley, Jude Law, Christopher Lee, and more, adapts the children’s book about a young orphan living in a Paris train station and the mystery he uncovers (Nov. 23).

REJOICE AND SHOUT is an inspiring documentary featuring Smokey Robinson and Mahalia Jackson that traces the evolution of gospel music through its many musical styles (Nov. 1).

The National Geographic documentary LIFE IN A DAY shows a snapshot of one day on Earth. It is an arranged series of video clips selected from 80,000 clips submitted to YouTube on a single day (Nov. 8).  

MAIN STREET tells the tale of how the lives of the residents of a small Southern city are changed by a stranger with a controversial plan to save their decaying hometown. Starring Orlando Bloom, Ellen Burstyn, Colin Firth, Patricia Clarkson, and Amber Tamblyn (Nov. 15).
