Saturday: What Did You Hear?

(Join each day’s Coffee Talk discussion: Mon: Parenting; Tues: Open Forum; Wed: NFP; Thu: Marriage; Fri: Education; Sat/Sun: Changing Roles)

Let's try an experiment with this weekend's Coffee Talk. Taking a page from an exercise Amy Welborn used to use at her old blog, what did you hear in the homily at Mass this weekend?

What did the priest preach about? What insights or resolutions did you take away? Was religious liberty mentioned during this Fortnight for Freedom kickoff weekend?

  • Last night the priest talked about how everyone, Christian or not, has crosses in life. And uniting our crosses to Christ's results in resurrection.

  • We attended a Mass prior to a Fortnight for Freedom prayer vigil at the U.S. Capitol. Archbishop Lori of Baltimore celebrated and he preached about the the legacy of St. Thomas More. He made a humorous distinction regarding the Gospel passage. At first Christ asks about the opinion polls: who do people say I am? And it's easy for the disciples to say what others think --within the margin of error :). But what Christ calls for next is not opinion, but a profession of faith --what do YOU say? Archbishop Lori tied that to St. Thomas' witness and further tied that to lay people standing up for religious liberty today. Is the need exaggerated? Isn't this just a dumb rule we can overlook? St. Thomas More, he pointed out, went to his grave over a dumb rule because it violated his conscience. He was more eloquent than this summary, but that was the nub.

  • Am from Abuja,Nigeria. Today, the priest simply based his homily on the question Our Lord asked His apostles. Who is Jesus to each and every one of us? What position does He occupy in my life? In your life? Does He have a say in our decision making? Be sincere to ure heart and do an Examination of Conscience!

  • Father focused on each of taking up our cross and doing it willingly. Also asked us to reflect on all our relationships to see if our treatment/behavior were crosses to others. I had not thought about it in that perspective....but after some reflection I can see where I need to not be someone else's cross.

  • I heard my 1-year old, mostly. Got bits and snatches of a plea for monetary help from a Dominican missionary from Africa.

  • Thanks for this topic, Rebecca. I'm in a similar camp to Carolyn A with little ones so I appreciate hearing from the others.
