  • I am starting perimenopause and I have know nothing about what is normal and what is not. I am getting my periods closer together (every 21 days) and they are heavy and last a week (so one week of bleeding for every two weeks off) I am anemic but due to stomach problems can't take iron pills. What do people do when they are bleeding too much of the time? When do you go in and ask for hormones so stop the bleeding?

  • I have two suggestions--if you are not comfortable talking with your own dr. first for an answer. First, I am not perimeopause (yet) but have had very heavy periods. Based on recommendations of Marilyn Shannon (author of Fertility, Cycles and Nutrition) I started taking flax oil. That has helped tremendously with my own cycles, and things are now tolerable. Second, I've heard ibuprofen can help with heavy periods as well, but I think you do need to take more than the recommended dose, and with stomach problems, that may not be good for you. Hope one of those ideas might help.

  • Thanks for the suggestions, Mary Therese. You are right that I can't take ibuprofen due to my gastritis but I will try the flax oil. How much do you take every day?

  • Right now, I take one capsule at night during the first 1/2 of my cycle, then after ovulation, I take 2 for 2 weeks. I seem to recall that Marilyn Shannon recommended up to 6/day, if that's what you need. I think a capsule is 1 gram (1000 mg)?. I just get it at Walgreens, Wal-Mart, wherever. I know there are nutrition savvy people out there who will tell you that's not the best quality, and you should get expeller-pressed fresh flax oil or grind your own flax seed, but these capsules worked for me, and were cheaper and easier than the others.
