  • Taking a page from Lori Hadacek Chaplin's feature on memorable Mother's Days, we thought we'd use this weekend's forum to invite you to share yours. All weekend, leave a memory or tell us how you're observing Mother's Day. http://www.catholicdigest.com/articles/food_fun/we_recommend/2013/04-25/most-memorable-mothers-day

  • I've never been a huge fan of Mother's Day. During my years of infertility and miscarriages, it was a very painful day for me. It seemed unfair to me to honor mothers when so many non-mothers don't have a special day of honor, and in my mind the mothers had already been richly blessed. Now that I am a mother, it's still not my favorite holiday, but at least it's not as painful as it was a few years ago. The first few years, though, it seemed like a setup for hurt feelings. My husband wasn't sure how to acknowledge it, and I ended up feeling hurt that after all these years of suffering through motherless Mother's Days, it would have been nice if he had planned something for me. My best Mother's Day ever was my son's first year of preschool, when the preschool helped the kids make cute crafts for all the moms. Being a sentimental person, these are the kind of gifts that mean the most to me. I hope that trend will continue in kindergarten!

  • thank-you very much ClaireS, I was very busy in nursing, taking care of my parents at the other end of the state and scurrying to work when other girls wanted off, so now I have nobody but Mary the mother of Jesus:)

  • Glenda, I'm a nurse too. Even though Mother's day isn't exactly my favorite holiday, as far as I'm concerned, you deserve to be honored on Mother's day as much as any other mother, because in caring for your aging parents and nursing your parents (and giving the other nurses the day off in the process), you were acting with the sacrificial love of a mother. It might sound like a cliche, but we are all called to be spiritual mothers whether or not we are biological mothers. (And by the way, I am not a biological mother to any living children. I have three biological children in Heaven and one adopted child on earth.)

  • Our older son celebrated his first communion yesterday and couldn't wait to go to mass today so he could receive again. A perfect Mother's Day gift.

  • It seems that one's wedding anniversary is the most appropriate time to celebrate your marriage...while Mother's Day is a time to reflect upon the blessing of motherhood (biological motherhood, adoptive/foster motherhood, spiritual motherhood, God-mothers, too!).
