  • Good morning! Does anyone have any favorite rhubarb recipes they'd like to share? This hot, wet weather has given us an abundance of rhubarb later in the season than usual. Also, asking prayers (through the intercession of St. Lucy) for my 8-year old nephew who has corneal abrasions in both eyes. Thank you!

  • Because of a generous relative, I have the opportunity to travel with my daughters to New York City in a week, for a week (should have put this in the Good News coffee talk!) and I would really love to take them to tea at the American Girl store. Has anyone done that? Any suggestions, or information on prices? Thank you!

  • I also wanted to share a link to the schedule for the 79th Annual Pilgrimage in Honor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help on Sat., Aug. 31 & Sun., Sept. 1 at Mount St. Macrina Monastery in Uniontown, PA. The theme for this year is "Theotokos, Steadfast Foundation of Faith". http://www.sistersofstbasil.org/wp-content/uploads/Pilgrimage-Invitation-Brochure-2013FINAL21.pdf. When Pope Pius XI of blessed memory sent the gift of an Icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help to the Sisters of St. Basil the Great, he requested that the Sisters spread devotion to the Mother of God under this title. In response, the Sisters initiated a Pilgrimage in her honor. Since 1934, thousands of Pilgrims have made the sacred journey of Pilgrimage to Mount St. Macrina. Here they place their needs, their hopes & desires in prayer at the Shrine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. This year’s theme, Theotokos, Steadfast Foundation of Faith, was chosen in keeping with the Year of Faith. As we continue our journey through this year, we can find no better guide than the Theotokos. At this pilgrimage & with the Mother of God at our side, we have a wonderful opportunity to nourish a deeper relationship with Jesus, her Divine Son. It is a perfect time for all of us to rediscover & renew our relationship with Christ & his Church.

  • Patricia, sorry I can't help with rhubarb recipes. I'm almost completely unfamiliar with it -- maybe it doesn't grow in the south? I never even see it at the supermarket. But I will pray for your nephew -- that sounds painful.

  • Prayers to St. Lucy, Patricia! Anne, I just took my daughter to A.G. in NYC 2 weeks ago. We had a great time! The tea room prices are all online and the prices of their products are, too. They have special things like the hair salon to have your doll's hair done but I'm not sure what they charge. We had my daughter's doll's ears pierced and that cost us $15.00. We also had her picture taken with her doll which they then put on the cover of an AG magazine and that ran about $25.00. It was a lot of fun. At lunch, they have a seat and tea cup for the doll right next to the child. It really is a fun time getting to look at everything close up. We then went to St. Patrick's Cathedral which is close by but it is under such serious construction that it was hard to really experience its grandeur. It won't be finished until December 2015! I hope you have a really great time. The city can be so exciting. We took our first daughter when she was 8 and now my youngest daughter for her 8th birthday. I even bought her an AG dress and matching one for her doll as part of her birthday present. She had such a great day. Which day are you going? I will put Mary in the window for a nice day for you.

  • Anne, I just reread your post. You need to make reservations (like now) for the tea room. It can fill up quickly. We made ours two weeks in advance and had to take the early lunch seating versus the time we wanted as it was booked. Just an FYI. :)

  • Patricia, I confess I'm a little afraid of rhubarb! However, I have always had good luck with recipes at King Arthur Flour. Here's a simple one -- and there are others if you look around. http://www.kingarthurflour.com/recipes/best-rhubarb-dessert-recipe

  • Patricia, strawberry rhubarb pie is really good. I am not at home to look at my recipes but you can probably google it. I have also canned it and it has lasted well. Then I also use it for pies. Rhubarb bread with strawberries is also good. A crisp works really well as well. Sorry I do not have the recipes, but I taste of home usually has good recipes.

  • KMB and Patricia, Thank you for your sweet prayers and good wishes for our trip! You warm my heart! :) I went right to the AG website and made a reservation for tea two weeks from today. I am so excited! I worked in NY for a number of years a long time ago but my daughters have never been there, and there is so much I want to show them. I admit I have mixed feelings about American Girl products -- it seems like consumerism run amok -- but the dolls are sweet and the time that an outing like this would be appropriate is so fleeting. I really can't wait!
