Here's an open thread for this Independence Day weekend. How are you observing the Fourth of July? (Or add anything else you'd like to talk about!)

(Join each day’s Coffee Talk discussion: Mon: Parenting; Tues: Open Forum; Wed: NFP; Thu: Marriage; Fri: Education; Sat/Sun: Changing Roles)

This is the Open Forum Coffee Talk. That means ... anything goes. Ask a question, make a suggestion, share a story, offer some advice -- the floor is yours!

  • My husband had to work today (he's still not home, but hopefully will be soon). My son went to camp this morning (his preschool teacher runs a morning camp out of her home, one week in July and one week in August). He did some 4th of July activities there, and he then he and I went to the park and came home to do a 4th of July craft. It is too hot to eat outside, so we're going to eat in the diningroom. I decorated the table in red, white and blue. We're having pasta, a very non-traditional 4th of July menu. If my husband had the day off we would probably grill burgers and hot dogs, but I hate to make him grill after working all day. For dessert we're going to have cake with red and blue sprinkles. Not exactly a banner 4th of July, but the best I could come up with given the heat and the fact that my husband had to work.

  • You can file this one away for next year -- Uncle Sam Ice Cream Cones. Quick, easy, and really cute. I've been making them every 4th for years, although they never turn out quite as darling as the ones in the photo. http://disney.go.com/disneyjunior/print/?id=1869144 This year I frosted the cones with some leftover white frosting and put red and blue sprinkles around the rim. Easier than dealing with fruit leather and decorating gel!

  • That's awesome Anne! Thanks for sharing. Too bad we didn't have an open 4th of July forum ahead of time to exchange ideas!

  • I was blessed with the opportunity to spend Indpendence Day running and exploring with my family in Acadia National Park. Our National Parks are a wonderful blessing...God's creation protected by government employees and maintained by our tax dollars -- a great example of the good America does for its citizens and the world...preserving our nation's natural resources and beauty. I cannot help but feel God's love for all mankind in such a beautiful place. I cannot help but feel gratitude for the gift of life in America when I am in Acadia.

  • That sounds like a lot of fun! My appreciation for parks has really increased since becoming a mother. Some of our best family outings have been at parks. There's always something for everyone. And for a little kid, a picnic in the park is the best!
