Our weekend forum is for issues related to "the sandwich generation." Coping with menopause, caring for aging parents, relations with adult children, grandchildren, going back to work after years at home. Want to hash out a difficulty, get some advice or share a strategy?

  • You have to read the Pope's remarks at a nursing home he visited recently. They are so sweet! He comes to them, he says, not only as Pope, but "as an elderly man among his peers." Great advice, and maybe encouraging for some aging parents and their care-givers. http://tiny.cc/twwmow

  • Hmm, I think I liked the housekeeping for the weekend talk . . . it was light-hearted which is good for low attendance days like the weekend but still useful!

  • Thanks for the input, Lisa! We're going to experiment a little to try to appeal to all of CD's audience, some of whom have requested a spot for these kinds of concerns. Until there are some site changes to make Coffee Talk more findable, ALL the days are low attendance, unfortunately. Thanks for stopping by. Tell your friends :)

  • I think another factor that might be contributing to the low attendance is the inability to receive email notifications of follow-up comments. That makes it harder to have a discussion. I'm hoping this option will be restored when the kinks are worked out.

  • I'm sorta unclear about life-changes as a topic, but this is someone else's life-change I have a question about, so I'll throw it out there... We were recently invited to a gay wedding. We aren't going, but I wonder if we can/should even send a card. And if so... what kind of card?!

  • It refers to folks who are moving into middle age and beyond, Unknown. Maybe this will help, unknown: "Our weekend forum is for issues related to "the sandwich generation." Coping with menopause, caring for aging parents, relations with adult children, grandchildren, going back to work after years at home. Want to hash out a difficulty, get some advice or share a strategy?" I'd say your topic fits right in, under the rubric of "relations with adult kids."

  • Thanks, Rebecca (I'm the unknown who asked about the gay wedding question - was in a hurry and forgot to put my name!) I suppose I'm too young for the weekend forum, though... I'm a newish mom in my 30's. I'll stick to the weekdays. Thanks for clarifying so tactfully.

  • I know I am late to the party here, but I have a question on the topic if anyone is discussing it. How do you handle, tactfully, helping your parents navigate new technology and systems, and still respect them as the parent. My parents are in their late 60s and still independent in every way, but they spend too much money on cell phones and don't seem to be able to use their computer for email, video chats, etc. Their pictures are stuck in their camera, because they don't know how to download them. They want to do all these things, but are not that great about becoming the "student" to my teacher. Has anyone had any success with bringing their parents along in this area, while still maintaining the parent/child dynamic?

  • First, I think the weekend topic is a great idea, since that is just where I fall in the spectrum of life:) To respond to Danielle re: parents and technology, if you have children who are tech savvy maybe they could help, instead of you. Or else try to teach them without really teaching them, as in , "I tried this (whatever) and it was much better than the other way." Good luck!

  • At Danielle M., one thing that helps with my mother and her computer, we are able to log-in remotely from our computer to her computer. We are able to do whatever updates that need to be done, or close down items that have popped up... my husband recently logged on to my mother's computer just to rotate a picture. Being able to log-in remotely is great!

  • Guess this one is not really for me either. I enjoyed the housekeeping for the weekend. I could get tips and other helpful information I might happen to need on the weekend. I know there is an anything goes on Tuesday but I never can seem to get in on it. Maybe there two be two on the weekend -- one for housekeeping etc and the other for changing roles. There would be something for both that way.
