  • Hi again Kathleen (and anyone else interested in paleo). I saw your concerns about it being an expensive diet and a tough one with the sugar cravings, and figured I'd throw in my two cents on what helped me. I thought about it for a year before i actually tried it. I started small- I decided on a date to start, and I was going to keep it up for three weeks and then re-evaluate whether to keep going. The first few days were the worst with the sugar cravings. I ate snacks all the time to keep myself full to make it easier to say no to the sweets. I mostly followed the eating advice in the 21 day primal challenge, but I didn't throw out groceries, or keep up with the exercise, and I'm way too embarrassed to re-arrange my desk to stand at work. I do love dark chocolate, and I kept a bar of 72% around to eat a square, especially in the evenings. I also ate a lot of forbidden "treat" foods to get past the cravings (e.g. bacon, macadamia nuts, artichokes, and raspberries.) After the first week of torture, my sugar cravings leveled off, and I noticed I wasn't eating as much portion wise. You may want to plan on splurging that first week to get you past the cravings. If you google "paleo on a budget", you'll see lots of suggestions. I do eat a lot of eggs, and I'm a big fan of a roast in the crockpot (those are both very budget friendly). I also love our local produce stand which helps me get a lot of veggies for a reasonable price. As a disclaimer, I am "cheating" a fair amount (think 1 or 2 days/week off diet) over the holidays, but I am trying to keep it reasonable with the intent of full on after the holidays. I hope your husband's job search is going well!

  • I don't want to hijack this thread with an emotional topic, but for those who might need it, you might find this homily by the Rev. Richard Kramer of the Archiocese of Washington about Newtown and Gaudete Sunday edifying. (Sorry the link's not live, but you can cut and paste.) http://www.wheatandweeds.com/2012/12/newtown-gaudete-sunday.html

  • I would agree with Kathleen. I have PCOS (although I've always been regular), I've been eating paleo for the last 7 weeks and this past cycle, I noticed siginifcant improvement in my pain prior to ovulation. I used to get a lot of cramping before and this cycle, it was not existant. I have three children, and right now we are not avoiding, but not trying either. I have to say I have more energy and when I really follow the diet, my sleep quality is amazing! When I first heard about it I said, there is no way that I can do this, I love carbs! When I finally took the plunge, I too said I'll try it for a month and see how I feel. Well, I can definitely say I feel better and my body is showing me that it is healthier too.

  • Hi all, I'm looking for any suggestions for a Christmas gift for my brother. He's a junior in high school and has fallen away from the faith, my parents aren't insisting he goes to mass. He doesn't really like to read. I'd like to get him something religious in addition to the "fun" present I got him.

  • Kate, they sell religious medals with St. Christopher on one side or a bible saying and on the other a sport, like basketball, soccer, martial arts if he is interested in a sport. This has been a big hit in my family.

  • Hi everyone! I just found out this is back....how I've missed you all! We are in the process of trying to "cut back" on the before ChristMass craziness, and embracing ChristMass time when it's meant to begin...on December 25th...any advice and ideas to succeed with this?

Posted on Dec 18th, 2012 at 4:30 PM by Donna L.

  • I missed this yesterday, but thanks for the advice on paleo eating. The more I think about it, the more I think it's something I really need to do. Last year at this time, I was able to get my husband on board and as a New Year's Resolution, we really committed to eating a "whole foods" diet, very little processed food - though we still have a tendency to eat a lot of sweets. Since that was pretty successful, maybe we need to try to make a similar commitment to paleo eating (and exercise!) going into the New Year. It's probably futile to try to start a new diet plan mere moments before Christmas, but I might be getting serious about doing this in the New Year. Like you, I've been thinking about it for a year - maybe now's the time to take the plunge. I did just search for "paleo on a budget," and it looks like there are lots of resources out there.

  • My husband is addicted to his smart phone. He's on it most of the time when he's home from work. I have asked him to put it away in a million different ways a million different times. (ok, slight exaggeration) Sometimes he complies, sometimes he gets angry and we fight, but mostly it just stays right in his face. I am sick of seeing him with it all the time. He reads news, sports articles, catholic blogs, and he checks his facebook non-stop. He gets in arguments with people on other websites about politics and religion. Sometimes he's texting a friend and it always seems as though his text messages cannot wait for later. I figure that after all the fights we've endured over this, that prayer is the only way to get him to stop. He's been getting really upset whenever I bring it up. He is in denial. I have also considered training my 2-year-old to tell him to stop (yes, i am dead serious). He has to have it for work. I want my husband back.... without a warm-glow on his face from the reflecting smart phone. Anyone want to offer advice? Please?

  • I don't have any advice, but I definitely feel your pain. My 74-year old father is that way with his smart phone, and it drives me crazy. I don't know how his wife puts up with it. He lives across the country and we only see him once/year, and it's sad that he has that thing in his face the entire time. I will say that when he visited this fall he was better about it, and even verbalized that he knows he uses it too much (I personally have never said anything about it to him). So maybe there's hope for your husband. These devices are definitely addictive. I don't have a smart phone, but I am certainly guilty of spending too much time online at times, particularly if there's a heated discussion going on.

  • Kate: take a look at those books by Amy Welborne especially for teens, the "Prove It!" books. I think there are 4 of them. Perfect for a young kid who turns away from the faith. I wouldnt buy him a medal as he has no use/reason to wear it. Dare him to read the books and see what happens. To anyone interested on paleo eating: you know those obnoxious commercials that say "ladies how many pounds have you gained since you turned 40?" when you go paleo, you laugh and say: I'm thinner and fitter now than when i was 40! I was a former sugar addict; its hard at first but very worth it. And: dont feed the troll.

  • In the May, 2013 issue the Last Word by Tom Hoopes titled "We are God's cats; Let's be his dogs" he used some information that he got from Gareth Morgan, anti-cat activist that has been proven to be inaccurate by many groups, including the Alley Cat Rescue. Only a very hungry cat is going to kill at that rate. I have had cats for the past 30+ years and have never seen this degree of killing including the feral colony that I helped feed and care for for over 2 years. I have a dog that will kill any small furry creature that may cross her path which is the reason I can't allow her inside my house for fear she will kill one of my cats. She caught and killed a small squirrel before I could get to her and showed no remorse at all even after my severe tongue lashing and scolding.....she just got mad at me and turned her back on me. My cats are all so lovable that I can't sit down before they are in my lap and begging for attention. One of them will play a game of fetch as long as I will. There are many cases of dogs turning on their masters or attacking children and severely biting them so they are not blameless. My cats mind me better than my dog does. If your cat is "obsessively grooming herself" perhaps you should take her to the vet and find out what is wrong. There is nothing more patient than a cat - they will sit forever until you understand what they are saying to you. Dogs are wired to love us no matter what we do to them......a cat chooses to love and serve us.....just like we choose to love God and serve Him. I would rather be like one of my cats, expecially the ones that I have rescued and show me daily how much they appreciate it.
