June 2012 Prayer and Reflection

Artist Corbert Gauthier began drawing as a child and even now places an emphasis on the drawing stage before he begins to paint. As Gauthier layers on the colors, he uses both opaque paints as well as glazing techniques, creating scenes and subjects that radiate with warmth and emotion.
Of his painting Bread of Life Gauthier says, “As Christ blessed the bread and wine, he knew what awaited him. Although capturing the fullness of this pivotal moment is an impossible task for any artist, I felt it was important to try.” For us, too, fully grasping the mystery of Christ’s presence in the Eucharist is simply impossible. But as we learn from the words and life of our Savior—and even as we sit quietly in the unexplainable mystery of the Eucharist—we grow closer to Jesus.
This month’s cover invites us to give thanks for Jesus’ gift of himself—his real presence in the Eucharist—and for what it means for us: “Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life…Whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world” (John 6:47, 51).
If you wish, sit quietly with the picture and reflect on the following questions:
- What would I like to say to Jesus?
- How can I live more fully, knowing that Christ lives within me?
