A native of Italy born in 1381, Rita wanted to be a nun at a young age. Instead, her parents arranged a marriage for her, and their choice of husband ended up being horrible. Vile and violent, her husband terrorized the entire neighborhood. For eighteen years she suffered his insults, infidelities, and ill will, praying for him the entire time. Right before her husband was ambushed and killed in the street, he allegedly had a change of heart and asked for her forgiveness. Before her two foul tempered sons could seek the assailants and kill them, they fell ill. Rita nursed them lovingly, bringing forgiveness and peace to their hearts before they died. Rita then finally fulfilled her dream of becoming a nun.
