Benedictine College: Where Greatness Begins

Founded in Atchison, Kansas, in 1858, Benedictine College has grown to be one of the top Catholic colleges in the nation and is now the largest private college in Kansas. With a highly rated nursing program, an Architecture degree, a full slate of Engineering degrees (chemical, civil, electrical and mechanical), a leading undergraduate Theology program, modern residence halls, the Murphy Student Recreation Center, and a highly successful College Ministry program, the college continues to attract high-achieving, faith-filled students from all across the United States.

State-of-the-Art STEM

Benedictine recently celebrated a Century of Science, 100 years since the first science degrees were offered. Part of that celebration was the beginning of a remodeling and expansion project for Westerman Hall, the science building. The new 40,000 square foot addition is now complete and professors have moved into the new labs, classrooms and offices. Remodeling is now underway in the existing four-story, 60,000 square foot section and plans are for that work to be finished in the spring. Outwardly, the building has been completely refaced and looks complete.

The college worked with one of the nation’s leading science and technology architects to design the facility and upon completion, Benedictine will lead the way in STEM education, providing state-of-the-art classroom space and laboratories for the sciences, engineering and mathematics. The college also announced the Dr. Wangari Maathai STEM Fellowships to make science, technology, engineering and mathematics degrees more accessible.

Community, Faith and Scholarship

Benedictine College is an academic community sponsored by Mount St. Scholastica Monastery and St. Benedict’s Abbey, both in Atchison, Kansas. The school is proud to have been named one of America’s Best Colleges by U.S. News & World Report as well as one of the top Catholic colleges in the nation by First Things magazine and the Newman Guide to Choosing a Catholic College. It prides itself on outstanding academics, extraordinary faith life, strong athletic programs, and an exceptional sense of community and belonging.  It has a mission to educate men and women within a community of faith and scholarship.

GOOD TO KNOW: “Great things begin at Benedictine College,” said Curtis Martin, founder and CEO of FOCUS. “They’ve developed a reputation for launching leaders into every area of the culture. Something unique is going on there that is not going on at very many other places.”
